Equine FAQ & Rules
1. Closing date for entries for catalogue on Friday 25th July 2025.
2. Enter Online at www.sedgefieldshow.co.uk or www.sedgefieldshow.lite.events or on Entry Form at rear of Equine Schedule.
3. ALL riders of horses, ponies or donkeys (including Judges) and handlers under 16 years, anywhere on the Showground are now required to wear head protection (hard hat) according to the current standards for head protection for equestrian activities: All PAS015, VG1, ASTM F1163-04a onwards: Snell E2001, Snell E2016, AS/NZS 3838 2006 onwards. Helmets must be worn with chin straps correctly and securely fastened at all times whilst mounted. This applies to all ridden competitors, young handlers under 16, demonstrations and whilst exercising within the Showground & Parking areas.
4. All riders of 18 & over, who chose to compete without regulation headwear must submit a completed disclaimer form to the Equine Secretary before riding at Sedgefield Show. Email equine.sedgefieldshow@gmail.com to receive copy
5. Please see Timetable before entering & take into consideration that despite all efforts, some classes may clash. It is the responsibility of the competitor to be present on time for their classes. All entrants are advised to consider the timing of the classes they choose to enter. No class will be delayed due to a competitor being double entered. The only reason for delaying a class will be due to unforeseen incidents which may occur during the day.
6. Please note that the first horse entry admits 2 people. Each horse entry after, admits 1 more person per horse. All other occupants of horse transport must pay entrance fee & wear the wristband to gain entry to showfield & judging rings. Extra “Wagon Passes” can be requested when class entries are made.
7. NO entries on the day, unless otherwise stated in Equine Schedule. NO refunds given.
8. The Show Committee will make the best arrangements in their power for the safety of entrants and animals – they will not be responsible for loss, damage or injury to any persons or animals.
9. By entering a class at Sedgefield Show competitors agree to abide by all the “Rules & Regulations of the Sedgefield & District Agricultural & Horticultural Society” found on www.sedgefieldshow.co.uk
10. All Horses & Ponies entering the Showground must be accompanied with a valid Horse Passport.
11. Exhibitors MUST have their own Public Liability insurance cover. You may be asked to show your certificate as proof. Personal insurance cover is recommended.
12. All horses & ponies must be in a sound & healthy condition. It is advised that all horses & ponies are up to date with vaccines.
13. The judge’s decision is final. The judge will ask the competitor to leave the ring should the welfare of the horse or pony, handler or rider, or any other competitor or official be compromised.
14. Ages of competitors are as on Show Day. Minimum age of competitors is 3 years old.
15. Cups to be held for one year only. Trophy winners are responsible for safekeeping, engraving and return of their trophies to the Equine Secretary, by July 1st 2025.
16. The Equine Vet on site will be Oaklands Veterinary Centre.
17. Equine Photographer will be Kevin Owens.

The Horse & Country Racehorses (HCR) series is open to Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds who have raced, trained or been bred to race. Racing injuries will be ignored providing the horse is sound. Riders must be 14 years plus, ridden horses must be 4 years plus, and veterans are 12 years plus. Judges will not ride and you will not be asked to gallop as a ride but maybe asked to gallop in your individual show. Qualifying shows are open to members and non-members.
In order to qualify for the HCR Championship Show at Netherton Equestrian, Perth on 6th/7th September 2025: * HCR members must carry their cards in the ring for signing at qualifying shows and should be placed 1st-4th (qualifications may be passed down to 6th place). * Non-members must send their qualification cards (presented by the judge if placed 1st-4th (6th)), fees and register with HCR before the entries close for HCR Championship show.

All entrants must be registered with the Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society. Registration details including pony name & registration number must be included on the entry form.
Classes must be confined to SPS-BS registered ponies. Ponies must be named on the entry form and in the catalogue. Society rosettes must only be given to ponies registered with the Society or to foals eligible for registration.
Three-year-old fillies with foals at foot may not be shown. All foals must be a minimum of three weeks old on the day of the Show.
To enter a stallion in any class (in-hand or performance) at an affiliated show, entire males aged 4 years old and over must have an “S” number and have been successfully through either the SPSBS Stallion assessment prior to 2006 or the current SPSBS Voluntary Veterinary Examination.
Ridden stallions MUST display a stallion bridle badge. In hand colts/stallions of two years old or over must be shown bitted and are advised to display a stallion bridle disc which are available to purchase from the SPSBS.
There must be no colts or entire males in Young Handlers classes. Young Handlers must be a minimum of 3 years of age on the day of the show. Children under 14 years old may not show colts (excluding foals) or Stallions in In-hand classes.
Children under 12 years old on the day of the show may not show a Stallion in ridden classes.
In the interests of safety, hard hats conforming to current British Safety standards must be worn, correctly secured, by all handlers aged 14 years or under in In-hand classes.
For Health & safety purposes judges and exhibitors must remain standing whilst in the ring when showing ponies. KNEELING IS NOT PERMITTED.
Hard hats of the current safety standard must be worn by all exhibitors, irrespective of age, in ridden classes.
Ridden and driven ponies must be 4 years old or over.
In ridden Classes, if a rider falls off at any time whilst in the ring, both pony and rider must leave the ring, rider dismounted, and take no further part.

SSADL Home Produced Qualifiers are OPEN to both Members and Non-Members of SSADL. No Spurs with the exception to senior side saddle riders. No Galloping or canter extensions, No Wearing of Face/Body Jewelry with the exception to the ear ring used by competitors with health problems. Foals are NOT permitted SSADL Classes. For In- Hand Classes – Minimum age of handler = 11 years old. First Ridden ponies/riders will be asked after the initial walk round to come into the centre of the ring. First Ridden Competitors will only canter in their individual shows. Lead Rein Riders/First Ridden competitors: If a strip section is required a lead rein rider MUST stay mounted.
STALLIONS- Either for In Hand or Ridden classes, Competitors Must be 16 years of age or over. Competitors cannot enter the ring once the command of trot has been given. The same rider/handler/pony/horse combination must stay the same from qualifier to Grand Finals, unless special circumstances should arise, then it will be left to the discretion of the Directors and Advisory Committee to oversee this rule if required.

2025 Qualification System: SSADL Members will receive their own qualification card. This is to be signed in the at time of judging/presentation. This is the members’ responsibility to ensure the right qualifier is signed for.

Concours d’Elegance of Great Britain
First, second and third placed horses/ponies not already qualified in eligible classes will qualify for the Champion of Britain Title classes to be held at Onley Equestrian Centre, Rugby, Warwickshire on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th August 2025. If a horse/pony has already qualified, cards may be handed down to 6th place at judge’s discretion. Each qualified horse/pony will receive a qualification card in the ring which will enable the owner to enter the Championship Show, provided the owner and rider/handler are, or become registered with the Concours d’Elegance Society within 21 days of the qualifying show. No horse registration is required.
